IS 10262 — Recommended Water Content
| Slump (mm) | Workability | Water (kg/m³) | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–25 | Very Low | ~160–170 | Road construction, pavement |
| 25–75 | Low | ~170–185 | Lightly reinforced sections |
| 75–100 | Medium | ~185–200 | Normal RCC slabs, beams |
| 100–150 | High | ~200–215 | Columns, thin walls |
| 150+ | Very High (SCC) | 215+ | Self-compacting, pumped concrete |
Abrams’ Law
The compressive strength of concrete is inversely proportional to the W/C ratio (for fully compacted concrete with same materials):
fc = A / Bw/c
Where A and B are empirical constants dependent on cement type and age. Higher W/C → lower strength and durability.
Key Rule (IS 456 Clause 6.1.2): The W/C ratio shall not exceed the limits given in Table 5 for durability. A lower W/C ratio always gives higher strength — but workability must also be maintained using plasticizers if needed.
Typical W/C Ranges
| W/C Ratio | Strength Range | Remark |
|---|---|---|
| 0.30 – 0.35 | 50 – 65 MPa | High strength / prestressed (use SP) |
| 0.35 – 0.40 | 40 – 55 MPa | M40–M50, industrial |
| 0.40 – 0.45 | 35 – 45 MPa | M30–M40, heavy structures |
| 0.45 – 0.50 | 28 – 38 MPa | M25–M30, general RCC |
| 0.50 – 0.55 | 20 – 28 MPa | M20–M25, slabs & beams |
| 0.55 – 0.60 | 15 – 22 MPa | M15–M20, non-critical |
| > 0.60 | < 15 MPa | PCC only, non-structural |
